Major Shakeup in Ukraine Amid War with Russia: Zelensky Appoints Yulia as Prime Minister (Image Source: Social Media)
Amid the war with Russia, a major political shake-up has taken place in Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelensky has appointed Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko as the new Prime Minister. Yulia replaces Denys Shmyhal, who was appointed PM in 2020 and held the position throughout the ongoing war for the last three years.
According to Euronews, on Monday (July 14), after a cabinet meeting, President Zelensky announced Yulia's name for the Prime Minister's position. The President stated that changes have begun in the executive leadership, and their impact will be visible in the coming time.
Yulia, aged 39, is considered a close aide of President Zelensky. After completing her studies in economics, she entered politics. In 2008, she graduated in economics from Kyiv University. Yulia is also known in Ukraine as a skilled economist.
In 2020, she joined the President’s office. Zelensky authorized her to lead negotiations on mineral deals with the United States, a task she performed efficiently. In 2021, Yulia was appointed as the Deputy Prime Minister.
Due to the war with Russia, reshuffling within the government’s executive body had been difficult. Zelensky struggled to find a suitable replacement for Denys. Yulia was a natural choice—she was already serving as Deputy PM and has a clean image. Hence, Zelensky handed her the PM’s responsibilities.
Russia’s attacks have pushed Ukraine onto the back foot. Immediate American support is crucial. Although the U.S. has promised aid, its effect is not visible on the ground. Through Yulia, Zelensky aims to strengthen ties with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Zelensky has announced Yulia’s appointment, but her name still requires formal approval from Ukraine's parliament. A parliamentary session is likely to be held soon to officially endorse her as Prime Minister.
Yulia’s first priority after assuming office will be to repair deteriorating relations with the United States. Currently, Ukraine has no ambassador in the U.S., and appointing one will be part of her responsibilities.
